quote for today

Bishop Helder Camara used to instruct his catechists, ‘Sisters and brothers, watch how you live. Your lives may be the only gospel your neighbours will ever read.’ We are all witnesses, at every moment of the day. That does not mean shouting the Creed from the rooftops. It means living in such a way that our lives would not make sense if God did not exist.

which begs the question…would your life make sense if God didnt exist?

the world that longs to take you in

came across this quote today:

And you? Maybe a moment will come when you’ll hesitate, hearing a word. In that instant lies your salvation. Heed the hesitation. Search out the space, the rift. Under this world there is another, waiting to be born. You can remain where you are, in the old world, tasting the bitter berries of disenchantment, or you can overcome yourself, rip yourself free of the word-lie, and enter the world that longs to take you in.

from History of a Disturbance by Steven Millhauser

i love the imagery here. listen for the whisper. for the echo of a voice, like nt wright would say. a charge to enter the world that longs to take us in - the ‘other’ world waiting to be born - i would even say the ‘other’ world that is already being born. man. good stuff. food for thought today…

i got this in an email from my mom this morning:

Hi there…….just back from a 5:30 start, working with the homeless
shelter.  I picked up 5 of the Hispanic guys and drove them back to Garner
at 6:30…they look for work at 7:00.  Then back to the church to clean up
and wash and dry sheets and towels.  I do have one more laundry run to make
and then done.  Whew, it is only 11:00 and I feel like my day is about over.

are you kidding me!!?!??! 5.30am, not pm. this is so amazing. so hopeful. thanks mom. you are a true inspiration.

our redemption
January 29, 2007, 2:23 pm

i am reading in galatians this morning and came upon this verse that struck me this morning. Galatians 3:14

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

he redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham (that we are blessed to BE a blessing) might come to the gentiles. this is crazy talk in some circles, right? i mean - i am redeemed so i can go to heaven, right? well this verse seems to argue something different. we are redeeemed for the sake of the world - we are redeemed so that we can be a blessing to all.  we are changed and made whole because God is in the process of making everything whole - and we get to be part of that process…unbelievable…

so i am talking with my dogg jason on im tonight and he tells me he is currently watching some kids from his community (visio dei) at the church. some single moms needed some time away so gore and crew made dinner and are hanging with the kids. then he tells me that there is an AA meeting happening in the room next door at the church (in the sanctuary). so amazing. they just got in this building at thanksgiving and are using it to take care of the community. so beautiful and so inspiring. i love hearing these stories of God’s kingdom…

and keep up with Mars Hill’s sermon series this holiday season. they are talking about this phrase “peace on earth” that seems so over-used this time of year and what that really means. you can download the messages here.
